(Stoke and Stone Fur and Feather Society)
The Club was formed in November 1964 when 12 people met at the Bridge Inn to form the Stoke and Stone Fur and Feathers Society. Initially the meeting had been called to form a rabbit club but after discussion it was felt that a society should be formed to cater for all types of small livestock.

Owing to the meeting being held on licensed premises young fanciers were not able to attend.

The first table or box show was held on Saturday 11th January 1964 at the Bridge Inn and was judged by Roy Boston of Stoke-on-Trent. Membership was 19 fanciers drawn from Uttoxeter and Stafford. Most members were from the rabbit fancy so an appeal was made for bird fanciers to come forward.

At this first show everyone was delighted with an entry of 80 rabbits and 35 guinea-pigs (or cavies as they are now described). Mr K Dallow, Club secretary said “We are delighted at the turnout and the variety of the stock entered”. First Prize for the best rabbit in the show went to George Lamb who remained a club member for many years. A New Zealand White went Best Fur rabbit owned by the secretary.

The Club continued to prosper during 1964 holding various monthly shows with exhibits steadily increasing. The first pen show was held in October with 78 rabbits and cavies being entered. Judges for the show Mr W C Wood and Mr A May and one of them went on record to say “In all my 65 years as a fancier he had never seen a club come so far in such a short time”. He went on to say that he was astonished at the cups that were available for competition. It is nice to know that we still try and keep up the tradition.

The best rabbit in the show was a young Angora exhibited by a Mr J Orpe of Crewe. A Chinchilla entered by Mr D R Rowley of Bignal End won the award for the Best Fur rabbit, while the best Rex rabbit was an Ermine Rex entered by Mr W Walker. Both Joe Orpe and Billy Walker remained stalwarts of this Club for many years and became Life Members. Both have sadly passed away but will be fondly remembered.

The first year proved a great success and in
January 1965 the first Annual General Meeting took place. The Secretary Mr K Dallow that in their first year there had been nine table shows and one pen show organised, and the Club had taken part in a challenge match against Walsall, a club with over 300 members, and had been in no way disgraced by the result. They had won the home leg and lost away, the aggregate result being a win for Walsall by the narrow margin of 11 points. It was hoped to participate in similar challenge matches with other neighbouring clubs in the coming year. At the last show of the year 78 rabbits had been entered and 73 cavies.

On Saturday 2nd February 1965 the first Annual Prize Distribution was held at the Loftus Club. Trophies were presented by Mr George Warrilow (Chairman) to Mr Roy Boston (points cup for rabbits) Mrs K Dallow (points cup for cavies) and to Miss Lucy Plimmer (junior cup for cavies). Mr Tim Newberry was awarded four of the individual trophies for cavies. Mr D Leese of Lightwood and his twin brother jointly collected three rabbit trophies and the remaining two were won by Mr George Lamb.

A presentation was also made to Mr Ken Dallow, founder secretary, in recognition of the efficient way he had steered the Club through its first highly successful year. His gift was a Wedgwood bowl.

Some of you may recognise in the picture Tony Sherwin (centre back), Charlie Plimmer and Ken Warrilow. Sadly, both Charlie and Ken have passed away but we have fond memories of them.

Towards the end of 2006 we were advised by the Committee at Walton Community Centre that we would have to leave for Health and Safety reasons. These being the development of a Nursery in the main hall. Fortunately, Tony and Prim Cannell and Mary Mason  found us our current home—The Victory Hall at Woore. After the first show held on Sunday 18th March 2007—we immediately felt at home.
